The Department of Education recently announced that, although not a mandatory requirement for Local Authority Maintained Schools they would strongly recommend undertaking Section 128 checks for all school governors, this includes governors currently serving and any future appointments.
As a local authority we agree with this position and as such have recently taken action to ensure that we are able to carry out these checks and will perform a section 128 check against all currently serving governors on every governing body within Kirklees, and those in Calderdale who purchase the Governor Clerking Service, at no additional cost.
Additionally, we will undertake a section 128 check on all future prospective governors prior to them completing a DBS application. If an individual appears on the section 128 list they will be prohibited from serving on any governing board and we will inform them of their ineligibility directly.
More about what a Section 128 is and why a check is needed can be found here.
Further communication will be distributed to schools once the check on all current serving governors is complete.
