This year’s flu immunisation campaign for children in Reception to Year 5 will be starting this Autumn and there’s some simple steps your school can take over the coming weeks to help the process.
The immunisations are part of a national programme organised by NHS England and they take the form of a nasal spray which is easily administered to children by experienced healthcare colleagues from Kirklees-based Locala during sessions run in each school.
Here’s how you can help make the campaign a success and help protect your pupils and communities from the spread for flu this Autumn/Winter:
In the next few weeks your school will be contacted to arrange your immunisation session, these will commence in October 2018. Once the session is confirmed you will be sent an Information pack which provides invaluable details to ensure immunisation sessions can run effectively. This includes all the requirements including the number of nurses which will attend the school so you can book an adequately sized room to use.
You can support the campaign by encouraging parents/carers to return the forms – that includes those people who don’t want their child to have the immunisation so we can accurately measure uptake.
The information pack also contains links to a ‘Prezi’ presentation which can be used in school newsletters to parents giving more information about the vaccine.
One issue we are aware of is the Porcine (pig based) content of the vaccine used. NHS England has created a short Youtube film by a GP talking about the vaccine which will help parents/carers make an informed choice. This link for that can be added to newsletters/websites: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MVbW25vUCOA
Please ensure a member of school staff with knowledge of the cohort involved is allocated to attend the session to help the nurses to identify the children correctly.
Thank you for your support with the immunisation campaign, keep an eye out for the information pack arriving and if you have any questions in the meantime please contact Linda Webster at Locala email@example.com or 0303 330 9105.
