In the interests of safeguarding pupils, all those who work or volunteer with children and young people, including School Governors are subject to clearance under the Disclosure and Barring (DBS) procedures. The Governor Clerking Service recently reviewed their practice for appointing governors in preparation for the new online DBS system which is now in place.
Therefore the term of office of any governor will not commence now until the Governor Clerking Service have received confirmation of a satisfactory disclosure. They may however attend meetings as a governor designate pending their clearance, provided that any contact with pupils of the school is under the supervision of either a member of staff or a governor of the school who holds current appropriate DBS clearance.
This change came into effect in March 2015 and applies now to all new governor appointments and all re-appointments, unless:
governors have registered on the update service in which case please contact the Governor Clerking Service and provide us with your details to enable us to access your DBS disclosure details online.
your DBS is less than 18months old on re-appointment.
In order to minimise any disruption on your Governing Body, as a result of this change, the Governor Clerking Service will be providing the Chair with an up to date list of current governors with the papers for their next meeting. This list will highlight those governors shortly due to end their term of office and Governing Bodies are being asked to give some consideration to any possible reappointments. Any governor considering reappointment will need to contact the Governor Clerking Service for their DBS application to be processed in advance of them coming to their end of term of office. This will avoid any gaps this new process may create. If you have any question please contact the a member of the Governor Clerking Team.
